DT Project- Concussions in Youth Sports

Empathize: Today, children are involved in many different activities in school and outside of school. It is common today for children to be active in sports that can cause trauma that they are either unprepared for or unaware of. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created a program called “Heads Up” for youth sports that offers information about concussions to parents, coaches, and young athletes involved with youth sports. Heads Up provides a lot of useful information about concussion prevention, treatment, and even recovery.

Define: I think the issue here is that many are poorly informed about the danger of concussions and how much it takes to recover from a concussion. If the public is more often properly informed about how to prevent and how to recover.

Ideate: Although there are many ways people are trying to prevent and treat concussions, I believe it is important to keep trying different ways to solve these issues while still allowing children the freedom to take part of the activity that they love so much. For this project, I want to focus on the testing to see if one has a concussion aspect of this issue. I think that it is very important that parents, coaches and the young athletes be aware of what some signs of a concussion are. I also think that since referees especially youth/student referees also play a large role in making these athletic activities happen, we also have to train these referees to be able to identify and “test” if the youth athlete is showing signs of a concussion if an accident occurs during an athletic activity.

Prototype: For this project, I want to create a way to help student referee volunteers to identify whether or not children who have been hurt during a sports activity have a concussion or are showing signs of having a concussion. I want to create a website that will inform all the referees everything there is to know about concussions including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment/ recovery. I think before someone is allowed to be a referee they should go through a special workshop to learn about concussions and maybe use a website like I will create to be informed about this issue.

Test: For this project i will be reaching out to some of my high school friends who are athletic referees for youth sports teams and ask them how much they know about concussions and to see if they find my website helpful with learning more about this issue. Before asking them to take a look at my website I asked them to attempt the quiz I created to see how much they actually knew about concussions. After they took the quiz one time, I asked them to review my website and to retake the quiz. Here are some results of before looking over the website and after looking over the information.

After reaching out to three friends about this topic I learned that since most of them are currently athletes or were previously involved in an athletic activity, they knew little to noting  about this topic. I asked them to sit down and take a look at the website I created (attached below) and to also attempt a short quiz about concussions. I asked 10 high school students. Out of ten student referees that took the quiz, 6 out of 10 got less than 50% on the quiz. After they reviewed my website, I asked them to retake the quiz and 9 out of 10 students received 100% on the quiz. After getting all the feedback from my friends, they all told me that they did not know how much research was out there on this topic. They thanked me for informing them more about this issue and said they would go on and use these helpful tips throughout their referring jobs with youth athletes.

Class Blog Cameo Semester 2

This week in Sports Med, we covered many topics about the nervous system and some about our body senses. We also continued to work on our project this semester about nutrition.

We learned about the different parts that make up our nervous system. I found it very interesting to discover that the brain, the spinal cord, and peripheral nerve all belong to the nervous system. From there, we learned about all the different and complex part that make up those three main sections of the nervous system. We completed a homework assignment that tested us on labeling a diagram of the Neuron and later completed a quiz on this same subject.

Also this week, we began reading about a lab we would be completing the next week in sports med. We finished the pre-lab assignment about the different senses in our body. We had to make a prediction on what we think would be the most sensitive part of our body to touch- the forearm, the finger tips, or the back of the hand. I predicted that our finger tips would be most sensitive because our fingers touch the most and we use them most often.

Finally this week, we continued working on out nutrition fad diet projects. We completed an assignment this week that outlined what exactly our diets are made of and what the idea behind it is. We also completed a food journal for three days. I found this assignment really cool because it made me cautious about the foods I was putting into my body.

Exercise and Brain Function

Taking care of my health is one of the most important things in my life. I have learned to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and to even take my sleeping schedule very seriously. After reading this article about the benefits of exercise I discovered that exercise is not only important in bettering your overall health, but also in your brain activity. As said in Quart’s blog post exercise also promotes a more positive attitude and outlook on everything. According to Brain HQ even exercising for just 20 minutes can stimulate information processing and memory functions.

I have always valued the benefits of exercising but this article really opened my eyed to how much more it benefits us. I strongly believe that staying in shape and eating healthy is the best medicine we can provide our bodies. I also believe that it is beneficial for any age and better to begin getting into this habit at a younger age. Its important to fit exercise and any physical activity into you busy schedule as often as possible.

Our Digestive & Immune Systems

For the human body, both the digestive system and the immune system are very important. According to Live Strong our digestive system works with our immune system to ensure that we stay healthy and also helps prevent infection. The digestive system works to break down foods to eventually help your body to absorb them. The immune system works to help fight against and protect your body from developing infections.

As humans, we consume bacteria constantly, causing out immune system to play a large and important role in our body.  It is crucial that our body protect itself from any harmful bacteria, toxins, and even viruses that can possible enter our digestive system. Our immune system does its job my deciding what is harmful and what is helpful to our bodies. Our digestive track is continuously being exposed to all different substances according IBS Treatment Center.

In order to perform their best, an athlete according to WebMD must eat properly, stay in shape, and be overall healthy. As an athlete you must be very cautious and aware of what you consume because certain foods can really take a toll on your strength, health, and even performance. It is important for an athlete to be aware of what types of foods would benefit their health and what types of food won’t. It is found that foods containing a lot of sugar should be avoided thirty minutes before performing in physical activity because sugar can cause you to become dehydrated sooner.  As an athlete, they should also make it a priority to eat their last meal about three to four house before taking part in any physical activity in order to allow the food to properly digest.

The best way an athlete can properly support their immune system is by eating foods containing essential vitamins and lots of protein that will provide support to their muscles according to Team Isagenix. Water is also very important for an athlete to drink because water regulates your body temperature and helps produce enough energy to stay active. Dehydration does not allow an athlete to perform to their full potential and an athlete could possibly have symptoms such as cramps, dizziness, and sometimes fatigue.

My View on Nutrition

Growing up, my mom was never really too into eating very healthy. As a child, she was allowed to eat whatever she liked. Of course my family believed that you must eat all the right foods to stay healthy and grow into a strong young adult.

As my siblings and I started growing, my grandmother decided that we should only eat the freshest foods available because she wanted us to ” grow up strong like Popeye the sailor man” as she used to tell me. After my grandma proposed this idea to my mom, my mom decided to do some more research.

When I was about nine years old, I developed a bone infection in my right knee. After this very serious incident, to which my doctors believe it could have been caused by a bacteria in a food I once consumed, my mom buckled down on our eating habits. From then on, she will only buy food that is not processed and or organic. My brothers and I take our daily supplements of vitamins. We learned how to distinguish chemicals in foods that are not good for us because my mom was so serious about this change.

Although my brothers hate our new eating habits, I believe they are truly beneficial to our health because I have already had so many health issues. I am very thankful that my mom takes time to ensure we are eating only the best foods for our bodies and have learned to love this eating style.

Live with a Happy Heart

In the United States, the leading cause of death in woman is due to heart disease. In this weeks sports med class, we learned all about heart disease and the different ways to prevent or improve upon it. Heart disease is caused by many things.

I will be focussing on how diet and exercise effect heart disease. According to MedlinePlus being overweight can cause heat failure, high blood pressure, and overall a lack of exercise can increase your chances of developing heart disease.

For this specific topic, we decided to create something that could be possibly very useful and easily accessible  to many people. My partner and I created a prototype for an app that we call “Happy Heart”.

At first we were unsure of a way to create something that everyone can use. But then we thought of creating an app. Here is our thinking process:

Empathize: Design an app for people who are unsure of ways to stay healthy or take care of themselves with dealing with heart disease.
Define: Some people are unsure of ways to eat healthy and ways they can exercise. Also people might find it easier to keep track of their diet through an organized app that also gives them different suggestions and ideas.
Ideate: Out app was created to help people discover ways to exercise and also different healthy recipes. We also created this app to help people log their diet throughout the day to see if they have been keeping up with healthy eating.
Prototype: On the website Appy Pie  we created a prototype for our app. On our prototype, we included two healthy recipes, and two
different exercises.

Test: To test this prototype, we showed the app to a few of our friends and explained to them all the details. The people we showed said that the app would ver helpful and motivating to live a healthier life.

Have you ever wondered about the “grass” at a soccer or football game?  Most of the games you attend are played on turf fields. You may think its real grass that your favorite team is playing on but it is most likely artificial turf. We recently discovered from KQED that more than 11,000 playing fields are made with artificial turf today in the U.S.A.  Even most of the fields in the National Football League are made with artificial turf.
Turf fields have become very popular in the athletic world due to many positives that come along with playing on these types of fields. Turf fields are not hard to take care of and it does not need to be watered which helps preserve water. Artificial fields also do not have to be mowed, and these fields are overall safer for athletes.
On the other hand, artificial fields can be dangerous. KQED also informed us that turf fields have harmful chemicals like arsenic, acetone, lead, and even mercury. These chemicals can cause issues with our nervous systems and causes dizziness or confusion sometimes. A lot of research is discovering the dangers of playing on these artificial fields.
I think artificial fields are very beneficial because it is not only safer to play on for athletes, but it also saves time, money, and even water. I personally preferred
playing on artificial turn rather than real grass. Although, I still think we should focus on improving turf fields and find ways to eliminate the chemicals that can be very harmful to our nervous system.

Class Blog Cameo

After wrapping Unit 3 on the cardiovascular system and cells we completed the unit 3 exam and have finally moved onto unit 4. This week in our sports medicine class we are learning about the circulatory system, parts of the blood, and the anatomy of the heart.  This week we also completed an assignment about the benefits of playing on artificial turf versus playing on real grass.  We learned how popular artificial turf is but we also discovered the dangers of playing on it as well. The circulatory system is the part of our body that carries all the blood. This is a very important part of human anatomy and I look forward to learning more about this topic and further exploring human anatomy.  This week we are also wrapping up our job shadowing hours. Over the past couple of weeks, we have had opportunities to shadow people with professions that are related to sports medicine that we could possibly be interested in the future. I got the chance to shadow a personal trainer, and I became very interested in her career! This project will be our first semester final project for the class, and completing job shadowing hours is just one task we must complete for this project.

Shadow Host

This semester I will be shadowing a personal trainer. A personal trainers job is to educate clients about the safety and effectiveness of exercising. Your personal trainer is someone who is there to help motivate you and coach you through physical activity. A trainer can be thought of as your own personal fitness coach. A personal trainer is someone who can help you set and achieve goals that you want to accomplish when it comes to weight loss or even being overall healthier in your life.

I choose this specific occupation, because I personally find it enjoying to work out. I try to stay in shape as best as I can. Personal training is also one option I am looking at for a possible career. I find it very important to keep up with exercise and I used to be very athletic before coming upon some injuries. I think personal training is a very interesting career to pursue.

The person I will be shadowing for my project is Monica Ehlers. She is one of my closets friends moms. She built a gym in her backyard. She teaches a fitness class once a week at 24 hour fitness. She also is a life coach. A life coach is someone who can help you discover things about your life that you did not even know existed.
